I'm looking to see if an Amcrest PTZ I picked up a while back has the same issue before I install it.
IP5M-D1188EW-28MM: distorted 16:9

Thanks for the update on the 1188, What PTZ did you pickup?

It's been sitting in the box for ~1.5 years, but this one:

I'm hoping this "native" 1080p camera won't have the issues of some 4:3 Amcrest cameras

Re: IP5M-D1188EW-28MM: distorted 16:9
Yeah that is a good camera. I am sure it should be ok without any issue with the lens. The system is setup with a Zoom Module that was well built and should work well. I have an older 853 on my house in the NW, however I am going to change out with an even older one. It is 12x and the older one the 850 is 20x and I want the extra zoom for where it is mounted. The location I want to put it here a 12x will be just fine.
Your Camera should be in 16:9 format.. Something I would do if you don't have IE is I would look at using the camera first with the normal FW that it comes with before updating to the newer one. Using Edge you can setup for IE mode and MS says they will support the IE mode in Edge until 2029 so there is still some time.
Anyway with the new FW it can be used in Chrome. I just think it might be better to look at the camera on older FW first. Also using ASP and IE if you still have IE as I do and keep denying the removal. However I heard they are trying to force the removal of IE from computers I am not 100% sure why. But I prefer that Browser for all cameras that will work with it. Some don't after the new FW update and worse yet all cameras or Devices updated to newer FW can't go back to Legacy FW. So once you go it is done.
Now something not to be worried about. If your camera is older like mine it might have a new OLDER FW that the camera can offer. It will not offer the JS FW at this time only Legacy and to the last known good install. So if the camera comes up with a box that says there is a newer FW I would update it to that one because it is the last Stable None Java Script FW. To install the new Java one you would need to DL and install from the Amcrest Web pages.

Re: IP5M-D1188EW-28MM: distorted 16:9
I swapped out the IP5M I had the 16:9 issue with this:
IP8M-2693EW-AI
It works like a charm with native 16:9 (3840x2160).
I also received a full-refund offer from Amcrest for the IP5M (otherwise, a good camera save for its support for 16:9.)
It was excellent of the company to make that offer, and I'll probably take them up since I won't be reinstalling the IP5M.
That IP8M will likely be my go-to fixed dome camera if it has good longevity.
They also make a version with ~5x optical zoom.
