Video Skipping from Playback

Post by nmsr1196 »

One of my Amcrest NVRs seems to be skipping video in the playback.
I have 4 PoE cameras directly connected to ports 1 - 4.
4 cameras IP5M-T1179E, IP4M-1055E, IP4M-1028E and IP8M-2493E.
Any ideas and/or recommendations on what my settings (camera, image, encode, etc should be?

Here is more information:
When I view the live video, the motion is smooth and the clock is smooth.
When I view playback, the video skips, and the clock also skips.
Viewing is from a TV connected to NVR HDMI port.
All 4 cameras are PoE wired directly to NVR.
NVR model: NV4108E-HS

Hello and Welcome to the Forum.. While I see you did Join in 2018 these are your First Post..

I am not sure what FW your using if it is the 2019 or 2020 it might be the issue with that..

I would try to load only the 2 4mp and the 5mp to play back as I think there might be a limit to 8mp playback also with the NVR having the new FW update if it does might add in some other issues with limit of what can playback..

Last thing that comes to mind is what is the age of your NVR? While my POE unit is not the HS and mine is much older it might be if it is an older unit maybe the HDD is starting to fail.

One last thing. If not able to format HDD before it starts to over write it I have noticed all my Recorders have some issues with odd playback.. Keeping the HDD with good space seems to clear that.. While it might not be your issue that is something to take a look at..

When my 4108E was less then a year old in 2017 it was on my home on the West coast with 2 cameras connected my 4tb went into error mode and shut down, after looking in the Logs it had been overwriting for some time and error out then changed the normal good Drive to 0 and stopped recording even though it was setup to overwrite.. Since then I keep tabs and at 20% when I get an alert the HDD is full I back up any that I need and format the HDD I have not had any strange playback and no more HDD offline events..

@Revo2Maxx
Thanks for the information.
I had not made a post in 2018 or 2019 because things were running smoothly. I did not notice any apparent issues. I still have the NV4116E-HS ( I think is the 2018 model). I had not noticed anything from it. ( I'd better check more thoroughly) so far, so good I think.

I purchased the 4108E on October 29th, 2020 from Amazon.
Today it was at version 3xxx. I looked on the website about an hour or so ago and saw a version 4xxx, so I upgraded it.I will try your idea after I let it run for a day or so. My hard drive checks out good, I have plenty of space on it. also, I invested in a purple drive when I purchased the unit. Thanks again for the information.

Well the update to a new FW might be the issue.. Sadly for me it is a Double Edge Sword.. One I like the look of the NEW GUI but it is so hard to understand and to get things to work to my liking. Seeing I have some older ones, an 4108h and a 4108E both are on older FW and won't get a new one so it is going to be hard to work with my 2116-HS..

Also something I noticed in the new FW you might want to know or maybe it won't matter to you.. But if you have your System with more then 1 Admin and they have Remote ability you may want to remove their ability to turn off the NVR by Remote.. Having the ability to do a Remote Reboot is one thing but in that area there is Reboot, shutdown and log out.. Having someone either not know or an Employee if it was setup for a business. They could turn it off and act like it was an accident and meant to log out.. Could do some things bad for Business while off like because the unit isn't recording.. Good news is kind of good anyway is if you were to remote in the system can be rebooted and it will be up again.. Bad news is if you didn't look at playback and see there was missing time the device acts like it is still online and you might not even know that it is offline.. Still able to watch live feeds and it would not be recording. If you were on location it will be on Black screen that says turn off machine..

So I have made this info known to Amcrest this is bad for a Security Device..

Yes, the GUI takes some getting use to.
I've had a few of the crest in the past, this is the first time I've upgraded.
Thanks for the security flaw tip, I'll check it out. That's a good catch. I saw that but thought nothing of it at the time.
But, that would be bad if more than one person had access to that feature.
Thanks for the good information.

Ok, so here is what I did.
two of the four cameras on my NVR_2 were already set to 1080. One of the two cameras that's set to 1080 is the one I'm doing the testing with video. I set the other two to 1080.
After that change, I was still seeing the skipping of video and/or fast-forwarding.
-The next change I made was to change the 'Pre-record' time.
the original setting I had it at was 5 seconds. I changed it to 0 seconds.
This improved the playback alot. Now it records more of the motion. There is still a pause but it starts from where it left off. I will continue to test.

So after some additional testing. the lastest change seemed to help a lot with the playback video.
Although there is still a 1/2 - 1 second pause... But, it starts off from about where it left off. I'm seeing
more of the motion-captured video that I was seeing before.
I'm not sure why I have to go through these additional changes to do so, that's still a mystery.
Is anyone else have these types of issues?

There is a Pause that I notice only when the Recording goes from the end of the last to the start of the new.. I have not seen this before this FW and only notice in this FW I am guessing it has to do with limits in the software
