System not recognizing full size of my HDD

Post by frapsy »

I just bought an AmCrest AMDV10818-4B-B & a 1TB Western Digital Surveillance HDD (WD10PURX) and installed it and set up the system.

When I was looking through the settings I noticed the Total Space only read as 116.44GB, so I tried formatting the drive with the box but it still just says 116.44GB TOTAL SPACE, less on available space as it’s already saving recordings.

Anyone know why it’s not reading the full amount of space available? I know that even when it reads it all it won’t be a full 1000GB, but I’m only getting 10% that and I’m sure that can’t be right.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I haven't got an answer for you, but my first step would be to take the drive out and pop it in an external HD docking station connected to my PC and see what was reported from there.

Presumably the drive was new and obtained from a reputable source?

I bought it from someone on eBay that I’ve bought from in the past, never had any problems. I connected it to my computer and the available space reads as 931.3GB using the program “Hard Disk Sentinel”

Performance is at 100%
Health is at 100%
With the message “The hard disk status is PERFECT. Problematic or weak sectors were not found and there are no spin up or data transfer errors. No actions needed.”

Total size 953859MB

OK, I use HD Sentinel myself and if that's the result you got from it, then the drive is not where the problem lies.

I'd check the firmware version for your device and make sure that there's no update available.

Is it just the HDD that you bought second hand or both the NVR and the HDD? If the NVR is new, I'd raise a support ticket with Amcrest.

'Fraid I can't help any further :)

NVR is brand new, hard drive was listed as “Pulled from working environment, tested and formatted”

But I think I solved this one, For some reason the NVR formatted a very small partition only on the drive (116GB) and the rest was listed as RAW. So I deleted the partition and am now using Disk Part (Windows 10 cmd prompt) to format the entire drive to Fat32, I will report back here once it’s done and post my results so maybe someone in the future can find this thread and solve their problem as well.

I solved it, here is the solution and problem summed up.

Problem
My NVR isn’t recognizing the full size of my HDD

Solution - For Windows 10
If you’ve already tried formatting the HDD with the NVR itself and the problem persist you will need to connect the HDD to a computer for complete reformatting.

Connect the HDD to a computer either via an internal SATA cable or external HDD dock.

Once connected Go to your search bar next to your Start Button in the Taskbar and search for “command prompt”

Once your prompt is open type “diskpart” and press enter

Once DiskPart opens type “list disk” and press enter and make note of the drive you are wishing to use for your NVR, in my case this was Disk 7, but I will use “X” for the example text

Type “select disk X” (replace X with the proper disk number) and press enter

Type “create partition primary” and press enter
Type “select partition 1” and press enter
Type “active” and press enter
Type “format fs=fat32” and press enter
Once it’s completed type “assign” and press enter
Type “Done” and press enter

Disconnect your HDD from your pc and reinstall into the NVR and the entire size should now be recognized.
