NV4116E-HS and AGPS9E8P-AT-96 connection advice.

Post by doritos »

Hello, I am just setting up my system and seem to have two ways to connect.
1) NVR to Switch and switch to internet modem. the 9 port modem has two data jacks.
2.) NVR to internet modem and then the switch also connected to the modem.
Any suggestions The NVR has 8 poe ports and to add the additional 8 cams requires the switch.

For now I am setup up with the NVR to internet broadband at this time. Switch has not been installed yet.

So I dont know what would be better. Set up switch inline after the NVR or directly to internet connection.
Just briefly set up system today and one cam. NVR also read no hard drive. I opened up and cable was not fully inserted to the drive. I guess there is no post testing on these devices.
I have so much to learn the in and outs of the software. I was also able to use the phone app and is operational. With the qr code setups: made things much easier.

First about the NVR HDD not being connected and no testing before Selling.. I am going to guess that either the Cable don't have a CLIP to keep it connected and if it does then it wasn't clipped in and may have come loose in shipping... I am going to guess that as I am not sure however I am going to guess that the System shipping was at least 2 times before it made it to you.. However it might have been as many as 3 times if you bought it off Amazon or if it is by a non Amcrest Seller it might have even moved more times then that and if there is no clip it could have had some mild impact and it came loose..

So when I bought my 4108H and my 2116-HS I choose not to buy the POE versions at times I wish I had for testing reasons only... However that is because I didn't want to be limited to having access to any ONE of my cameras.. With a POE NVR your Cameras have no access to the internet or Network traffic without some Creative Networking... Infact they say that one shouldn't connect a Hub or switch to the backside of the POE NVR and some have and can access things by doing so...

So I am going to try and explain the best I can so I don't confuse you (That is my Goal) to aid in this I am going to number your ports...

Eth0 Is the Network port that all DVR/NVR's have on it. This is for connecting to a Router, Switch or hub.. Front Side.
Port 1-8 = Ch 1-8 these are the POE ports that are on the back for Cameras connected can be added into NVR...

So what I would do.. Again this is only what I would do.. I would connect any Camera to the Ch 1-8 that I don't want or need to access from the Front Side... These are cameras that are going to be a Set it and forget it kind of thing However all cameras are going to need some type of setup for best results.. This might only be using 6 of the NVR's POE ports because the other 2 are needing more WebUI access and or I want to be able to access them when I am away from home and don't want to have to scroll though my NVR's cameras to get to it... These Camera might be PTZ or needing adjustments more then the just set it and forget it format...

So I would take your Switch connect it to your Router. I would take your NVR Eth0 and Connect it to your Switch. I would take all your Cameras you want connected to the POE NVR and set them up on the NVR so they are all loaded in. Then take the cameras 1 at a time and connect them to the Switch and log into them over the WebUI (first step connecting them all to the NVR POE port first can be Omitted if you want to setup Special IPs first) however once you connect each camera to your Switch, make adjustment over the WebUI. Once all settings are setup in the cameras remove them from switch and connect to the port you had them on Once all done with those, Take your cameras you want on the Front Side and connect to the Switch, Log into them over the Cameras WebUI and setup for service.. Once ready for service using the NVR load each camera from the Front side into the NVR... You will then as long as the Front Side cameras are only Connected to the Switch you will have outside access to them... However you can also when you connect over internet to your NVR port you will still see each camera added to the NVR front and back side however it is limited to how or what you can change though the NVR..

For you it might be that you don't need any of your cameras to have access from WebUI after setup and elect to put them all on the Backside... If you have any Zoom cameras or PTZ cameras I would make sure these are on the Front side of the NVR...

Thanks Revo2MAXX, I set up NVR to Switch and Switch to Router/broadband. Have Pro on laptop wireless. Having conflict probably with ip address settings I think.. Phone app also not working now on the one cam I had on back end. Also plugged in a second cam on front end or switch (correct me if I am wrong in describing that) though no acknowledgement of it being there. Tried to setup thru NVR screens and Pro but does not show up in search for devices. Ran IP config but I think I have to use my device segment numbers.
Like I said I have a bit to go on getting to understand this and the switch just upped the game for me but it will have to be used before I get this system fully operational. I dont know at this time if I have to go into broadband modem and make some setting to pass thru the switch. Also have two wireless cams that I will install later on (lest of my problems right now). For now I may call it a day - headache already with this hot humid heat even inside. Though its fun to be playing and learning this NVR IP cam system.
I will have to do some more reading about switches inline devices and router/broadband. Seems auto config didnot take place.

Yes the hard drive cable was not clipped in properly. Sure could of gotten a good bump during shipping. Ordered system from Home Depot and was shipped UPS. So who knows how many hands it traded.
So if I read correctly, you say to install/setup cams on switch then move them to the back side (NVR PORTS) when done and reconfig? I will most likely want to be able to view all my cams from the cell app when I am not home.
I have also rebooted all devices several times and had reset nvr to defaults and begun over again.
Again thanks for you time and help - much appreciated!

Ok so I will run down some numbers and maybe that will help.. However I guess I should have asked is your POE Switch a Managed or unmanaged switch? It should be in the DOCS either way or outside of box...

So lets say that your Router is DHCP to your network at 10.0.1.1 for the router and hands out Ip's starting with 2 to 254... Your NVR will when connected take a IP if setup with DHCP and lets say it is 10.0.1.123. On the back end AKA the NVR side ports them camera numbers are not going to be within that range and might be 192.168.1.100... However when you make a connection to your NVR over your network you will be able to see all the cameras that are connected to your NVR over its port... SO sadly with a POE NVR them cameras backside won't be able to connect past NVR and to be honest most times you don't need to...

So what I mean about setting up your Cameras on the Front side and then put them on the backside is to make sure they are configured past what the NVR will let you change.. ( there are things that you can change in the Camera that can't be changed though the NVR) you don't need to setup camera on Front side and setup again on backside I was just saying that I would Personally take my camera if I wanted the IP that the NVR will hand out to them to stay what the NVR gives it, Then move to Front side (POE SWITCH) and make any camera adjustments... Maybe you want to setup somethings that can't be done though the NVR... Make them changes and also change the IP from DHCP to Static...

Also so I am clear.. If your cameras that load on your nvr are given a 192.168.1.101,102, 103 and so on and want to keep them IP addresses then you would make them Static at that IP...

Now where it will get confusing... Your router is running or should be running in DHCP mode... that means when you connect the camera that maybe running on DHCP that cameras address will change to what ever your router gives it.. So when you take a camera that was set up say with the 102 as stated above when you connect to your router it will be given an Ip address of lets say it was as I said before in the 10.0.1.125 for that camera. So now your NVR won't even see it as a camera that was already added... So if you want to keep the IP that the camera had on your NVR when you go to the WebUI over the IP the router gave it as 10.0.1.125 you would go to the cameras Setup, Network, TCP/IP and pick Static and then change the numbers to what it was given by the NVR of 192.168.1.102. Then when you click save it will close connection at the IP you were on and try and load on the new Static IP and this is where info below will help make that soo...

Issue with that idea... Your computer is working on 10.0.1.xxx so you would need to put in your networking setup of your computer a second IP in the Range of the cameras that you want to set them Static too... That solves that... So under your computers network config ethernet tcp/ip for IPv4 you would click on advanced and then click add for another IP address then would put in the 192.168.1.240 or an IP that your NVR hasn't passed out.. Then this will let you have access to the cameras after you set it to a Static IP under the 192.168.1.xxx range.. This will let you work with them later on when you need to make changes and you move it over to the Switch POE port for config needs...

Revo2Maxx, thanks for the info. I put my setup away cause it was on the dining table. Until this Friday I will get back into it. Shortly after my last comment I was able to view 1 cam from the front and a 2nd from the back end. (this is with NVR to SWITCH to ROUTER as the setup) Currently It appeared not connect to router/INTERNET access but was physically (wiring) connected as before. For now I will digest your last comments and give it a try this weekend again.

The switch is Amcrest type (model above on header) but it does not say "managed" or "unmanaged" on the box or in the user manual, specs. [And speaking of: just this week or so I found out of the different types of POE cable medium/technologies types - I though it was one only with source voltage and intelligence.} Leaning as I go along. I assume unmanaged: meaning I think self set up with basically no user interface.

Regardless I think nvr and router were working properly at first but surely need to have that router installed in line between them. Live and learn for me. Again Thanks for the info and be posting again this weekend.
As for your input on using the front side install for config of cams and then putting back on the NVR - I understand what your saying with that. So WEBui has more options to the cam settings/adjustment than the NVR's software. tks.

In last paragraph, I mean Switch needs to be inline with nvr and router.

Latest update!
After doing some reading about differences between routers, switch and hubs. I kinda realize that the simplest set up was to set up the NVR directly to the router/broadband and then the SWITCH directly on another cat line to the router/broadband. With this setup I am able to view cams on the back end and front end. Though still lost in navigating and using software on NVR, webUI and cell phone. So far one cam on nvr, one on switch and one on wifi thru router. Some progress but still have along way to go before I put this new system on line. Again Thanks Revo2Maxx for you input.
I see what your saying about more options avail apart from the NVR software. Thing I need to figure right now before proceeding is assigning a channel number to a new camera so I can have them in sequence like 1234 on back side then 9,10,11, 12 on front side and will the wireless appears once set up with Webui and cat unplugged appears: the router takes over with that ip and data.
I was originally trying to set up a cascaded router but I dont think the switch would act like it. It was an option on my router but would not acknowledge it when I tried to change it. And once again. I am not an IT pro.

I have a Complex setup I would guess.. I have a POE and POE+ switch both being 24 +2 ports and a Gig Switch and the gig switch is connected to my Router and 3 cameras on the router also the wifi cameras but all other devices are connected to my Switches even my other 2 routers are connected to my Gig Switch...

So to setup a Wifi Camera most times it will need a Different Wifi Ip.

So what you want to do is Setup your WIFI camera seeing it is going to be on the front side anyway no need to mess with the camera on theNVR until your ready to add it to your NVR as a Wifi camera... I don't know as I just went down the line when I setup my NVR's But I think they can't be setup as our DVR's can by what ever ch you want past the last used Ch... So this is how you could get away with that.. Setup your cameras as you like that is NVR based and i am sure it will be 1-8 respectfully then when you get to the front side, you can setup 1 camera under different IP addresses and install it on the NVR.. To make this fast. Leave admin admin password as default, then load the camera ch9, take and change Ip make that one ch10 chnage Ip using WebUI to change IP under networking and TCP/IP Static ip, change IP again add to nvr ch11.. Then you want your Wifi on ch12-16 you have the last 4 ch to install your Wifi... You would Log in to your Camera, setup, network, TCP/IP, Then change the drop down to Wireless, set to Static, then change to IP address you want for your Wifi cameras, then subnet, DNS, and save, Then you will want to click on the Wifi under Networking, Then you will click Search, Then you will Click on the Router you want to load your camera on for Wifi, It will ask you for a Password to the Router save. Log out, remove from cable, reboot camera, log in under Wifi IP double check that it is working right, At this time change Password for Admin to what you want Then log in your NVR, setup camera, next in list say is ch12, load camera make changes to reflect your new Password for the camera and now it should be setup on Ch12 Repeat for the rest of your Wifi cameras...

So I thought I would touch base on some of my Ideas.. While this is how I do it.. I do it this way because I normally install the cameras after the Fact of setting them up over WEB UI so at this time they are all setup and working... While I am human I can have faults and many I do...

So with all that said I thought I would talk about Setting the cameras over your NVR as well.. Lets say you have your cameras that your going to connect to your NVR this could be by POE Switch and or by the Built in POE for people that have that like yours... Plug in the camera, Let the camera load, then you can go into the NVR menu, click on camera, click on Search in the top window, then it will bring up all your cameras. Maybe they are on a Default Ip all showing the same IP or one close to the same.. But this IP address that is there you don't want to use. In that top window click on the little button next to the Toggle box.. There you can then setup your camera to the IP, Subnet, Default Gateway user name and password to suit your needs... However please note that when you change the Password in the box there it will not setup in your NVR as the new Password so after you change all that and click add it will come up say wrong password, just click the pencil and change to the password you just used... While it is dangerous to make changes to Smart Home products outside the Smart Home App I just made some changes to my ASH21 by Modify of IP address, and changed Password then click save and a message came up saying that it was changed. I then clicked the box and added it.. Came up as bad password, changed to what I just changed it to and saved and camera is now loaded under that IP address, password and for me it just moved to the only CH I had open on that NVR as I deleted it under its normal IP before changes were made...

So While I don't do it this way normally I wanted to mention that you can do it that way.. It might be best way for the cameras that you are not really needing much front side WebUI Changes... I even have a Motion Detection device that is a Hidden IP camera and I have never looked it over because well I couldn't get the Wifi to work lol.. But wanted to see if it could be setup that way and sure enough it was ONVIF and was able to pick up Plugged in data and add it to my 16ch NVR by changing the IP, Gateway and left the password for now normal added it and came right up...

So as I said I have always setup my Cameras Over WebUI and now maybe lol I should have tried to find some of them in my NVR first and changed IP to suit my needs from there it was Fast and easy and better then having to look for the IP addresses in the ARP table lol...

Revo2MAXX, great info and well, A lot to digest for mew. Between cell, laptop and nvr software - little by little figuring out how all this works together. Again for during the week I put up most of the items except for the switch. Eventually I will leave it running, get cams set up for cat and wireless and begin new install of cams around house. Again thanks for the info. art
