wrong timezone offset in emails

Post by wjcarpenter »

My camera is a 721s running current firmware.

I am on the US west coast, so I have the camera's timezone set up as UTC-0800. Timestamps on recordings are correct, both in the overlay and in the filenames. When I get an email alert, the messages use a timezone offset of UTC+0800 (notice plus instead of minus).

This isn't just an inconvenience so that my email reader has to translate things. The times are literally off by 16 hours. Here's an example:

Code: Select all

Date: Sun, 04 Dec 2016 10:34:33 +0800
That time would be exactly correct if the offset for UTC-0800 were used.

Is this blunder a known issue with a fix on the horizon? Anybody else seeing it?

I was have the same problem with the time stamp. I was using Thunderbird as my email client, so I tried another email client (Windows 10 Mail) and the problem was resolved. So it must be a compatibility issue with Thunderbird. :)

Most email clients have various sort options which includes "Received" and "Sent". The "Sent" timestamp is the one that is supplied by the sending application that creates the header, which in this case if the Amcrest device (camera, nvr, or dvr).

The problem is that Amcrest firmware needs a patch to change the date heater from a hard coded "+0800" to a variable and which should have the device's current time. Fixing the Amcrest device should be a minor fix and should be fixed in the next firmware update after it's discovered and reported. However, many devices (such as the NV4116-HS) is not having the issue addressed with the needed patch. The Amcrest maintainer might not be aware of each device having the problem and it's up to the users to report the devices that needs patches.

As far as workaround as in your case, you switch to an email client that uses the "Received" timestamp for display, by default rather than the "Sent" timestamp.

You can still use Thunderbird and have the same results as a workaround. Currently for Thunderbird you will need to install a plugin to have the "Received" timestamp work properly (https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/th ... ived-date/).
