port/channel assignment

I'm setting up a NV4108E. The 1st camera I connect (using port 1) is assigned to channel 1. The second camera I connect is assigned to channel 5 regardless of what port I use. I want to view both cameras in the 4-camera screen but I have to select "view channels 1-4" to see the 1st camera and "view channels 5-8" to see the 2nd camera. How can I control which ports are assigned to which channels?
