P2P Explanation

I am new to the forum and just installed the IP2M-841. I am moderately technical but would like to know how P2P connections work without port forwarding/DDNS. Are connections initiated by a cloud server and if so does the camera data flow through those servers? What are the security implications? I am guessing it is same principle as a Nest thermostat but wanted to make sure. Any information would be much appreciated.
