NV4116E-HS Built in Switch ports flapping

Post by pir8radio »

I have the NV4116E-HS, which is a 16 port nvr, the unit has a built in 8 port poe switch on the back. Obviously I cant plug in 16 cameras to 8 ports, so i have a link from the NVR to a managed 24 port POE switch. This connection link drops ever 2 minutes exactly from the NV4116E-HS side. I put a test set on the switch and it also drops out every 2 minutes EXACTLY. Which i believe is some kind of software issue, if it was hardware it would not be happening on such an exact schedule. I'm a large scale network guy as my career, my test set used cost more than my car lol.. So I assure anyone who is reading, the issue is 99.9999% not on my end, it is within the NVR. I have also set the port to manual 100M Full Duplex so it doesn't try to auto negotiate, same issue.

Here is a log snipp from my managed switch showing the port that goes to the NVR switch dropping out every 2 mins. As a side note, I don't loose video on any of the cameras, but it does have a slight glitch.

Hi pir8radio,

Can you explain how you connected your switch and NVR.

via a cat6 premade patch cable. from the 24 port switch to the 8 port built in switch. I can not use the wan port on the NVR because that is on a different network.

Hi pir8radio,

Thats not the right connection method, The recommended connection is you have to connect the NVR and Switch to common router , Switch should not be connected to NVR ports.

Please check attached image and do the connection that way it will fix your issue.

I can not do that. I have two networks, one for cameras and one for internet/computers tied to a router. If i hook it up as you show in your image, what is to stop someone from hooking up to one of my CCTV ethernet connections outside of my building and get right onto my PC network? It would be a security risk. Also since these NVR's only come with Ether 100 ports I don't want to consume any bandwidth on the WAN port for cameras, because streaming 16 cameras at 5mbps will already use 80% of the wan connection, add 10 more cameras to that and that port is overloaded by 30%, I will now have recording issues on those 10 cameras.

Why would the internal switch not be able to hook to another switch? What firmware tasks are you performing on this switch? Can you guys fix this issue?

I figured out the issue for anyone else looking into it.. I used wireshark, and it appears that each switch port on the NVR pings an ip associated with the port number. The switch will ping x.x.x.65, x.x.x.66 ..... to x.x.x.72 for ports 1-8 Is there a way to disable this ping/auto port reset "feature". If not please add it to future firmware.

Sooo.... Can you let the powers to be know to please remove the Ping/port reset feature (or allow us to turn it off) of the internal switch on NVR's? How would we use this NVR with third party cameras that have static IP's set? The port would be dropping out constantly too...
