I’m trying to find that magic combination of “encode” settings that will allow me to store as much video as possible while still allowing for good quality video. So I’m looking for any insight other forum members might have on the subject.
I have a NV2108E-HS with a 2TB HDD and (4) IP2M-843E cameras.
My original settings were …
Compression: H.264H
Resolution: 1920x1080
Frame Rate: 30
Bit Rate Type: CBR
Bit Rate (Kb/S): 4096
These settings were applied to the “Regular” and “Motion Detect” Streams for all 4 cameras.
My 1st experiment was to try different compression settings, and I found that H.264 gave a slight reduction in the average file size.
My 2nd experiment was to change the frame rate to 20fps. I expected a significant reduction in file size as I had just dumped 1/3 of my frames but I saw virtually no reduction in file size! I’m not sure I understand why unless it has something to do with the fact that my cameras view areas that change very little over time and that once that stream is compressed there is very little difference between 20fps and 30fps.
My 3rd experiment was to change the bit rate type to VBR with the Quality set at 4. The bit rate is still set at 4096 but I believe this is a max bit rate when using VBR. This step yielded about a 20% reduction in average file size.
All three of these changes together reduced average file size by about 22%.
I don’t really want to reduce image resolution, I want to be able to zoom into the images somewhat and still have enough detail to be able to see what is going on.
My current settings are …
Compression: H.264
Resolution: 1920x1080
Frame Rate: 20
Bit Rate Type: VBR
Quality: 4
Bit Rate (Kb/S): 4096
Are there any suggestions as to what I should try next?
Thanks in advance.
