Can I connect the LAN directly to my PC?

The router is in the house, the security system is outside in the garage. My PC is also in the garage, can I just connect to that? Would that work?

If not, is there a solution that doesn't involve digging a 100-foot trench and running a cable through the house?

If you want to remotely connect to the DVR from a PC or smartphone, it should be connected to a router. One thing you can try is to set up a wireless repeater/access point in the garage and connect the DVR to the access point.
