ASH41-B will not connect to Wi-Fi

Post by jasonpa000 »

I just received two of these cameras this week, and I've had a lot of trouble trying to get them working on Wi-Fi.

Camera Firmware: 2.800.00AC008.0.R.220816 - latest by the way.

I've been able to do both the Ethernet and Wi-Fi setup through the Amcrest Smart Home application, and I can set the proper access point and password to connect to. The wizard fails to complete, as the device fails to connect over Wi-Fi to the Amcrest servers.

I can get the device working over Ethernet, and set up the Wi-Fi configuration, but as soon as I unplug it, it will not connect, even after a powercycle.

I've done multiple factory resets, and attempted different ways to set up Wi-Fi.

My network is 2.4Ghz only, but I have two access points with the same name, but it shouldn't matter which one the cameras connect to. I have an AD110 doorbell on this network without issue, so it just seems to be a problem with these new cameras.

What I can see by doing a bit of network analysis, is the camera is connecting to the access point using the wrong IP - 192.168.0.108. I've read in a few places this is the default Amcrest IP. I can even see when I statically set the correct IP, that it looks for this information:

Any advice on what I can do to get these working?

For clarification in the above network capture: I manually set the IP for the camera to 192.168.100.59, but it still tries to access the gateway 192.168.0.1. eventually, the IP fails back to 192.168.0.108, which is the default Amcrest IP.

So it seems no matter what I do/set, the camera does not use the proper network settings - whether obtaining statically or via DHCP.

Hello and Welcome to the Forum

I am sure you know already seeing you have an Ad110, The ASH42 requires being setup using the Amcrest Smart Home app on Droid or iOS.. If you are using iOS with Smart Home App then I would try to use a Droid from friend or family member to setup the camera using the app..

I am using the Android app to set up the device. I am able to get it fully set up over Ethernet, but the device will not switch over to Wi-Fi when unplugged.

When attempting to set up using the Android app via Wi-Fi, I can get the camera to hotspot to set it up, but it fails attempting to save the Wi-Fi connection information and connect to the Amcrest servers.

So that doesn't work either. If I start connected to the same Wi-Fi network I want the camera on, then start the pairing, it tries to get my phone to automatically connect to the hotspot being generated by the camera. It says "Connection Successful", but my phone doesn't actually connect to the network automatically. And that's even if I've manually set to "Forget" the network, as if it's saved, it won't automatically connect:

So usually I end up with this error:

If I time it just right, I can start the pairing, switch over to my Wi-Fi menu, force select the Amcrest hotspot, and I can get it to connect. It takes 4-5 tries, because if you're not fast enough, you just get the above error, even if you manage to connect to the hotspot.

Now if I actually manage to get past this point, I can finish the configuration by setting a password, recovery email, and choose the Wi-Fi network. It does see the network, and I can provide the correct password. But I ALWAYS get this error:

Looking at my Wi-Fi settings, I can see the camera connecting to the access point, but again, it's using the default Amcrest IP address:

So because it's not using a proper address from the DHCP server, or allowing me to set static information, it fails to connect to the internet, and then times out above.

Overall this is a pretty garbage, frustrating experience. I'm really at a loss how to work with this because I'm forced to use the Amcrest Smart Home application to provision the device, and it doesn't have the configuration options to set the network settings properly.

Oh and I checked my DHCP server and it's totally advertising the correct IP range to the camera. You can see the highlighted MAC address, which is the camera's Wi-Fi hardware address. But the camera never picks up the IP properly, and defaults back to the Amcrest IP 192.168.0.108.

Not really sure why you chose the ASH41 over the 1041B, They are the same type mini Pan and tilt indoor camera just one is built like the older 841, 941 and 1051 of the past and has normal IP camera system setup rather then using the ASH Smart Home App.. Now the 1041 has its own issues. I have older ASH21 that is the 2mp of the ASH41 and I have the 841v3 that is also the 2mp of the 1041. Both of them don't have the issues. However with any ASH line the Smart Home App is Required to setup for the first time.. I will be changing out all my ASH products before long and even using a different camera with White LEDS in place of the ASH26 Flood light.. Mainly because I don't want issues with Wifi cameras being used for Security Cameras. Wired products are generally preferred line of Security Cameras. I will keep the ASH47 only because I use it outdoors in a place I can't find another camera to fit at that location with the options and I use it with Ethernet connected.

Honestly, because the product page for the 1041B didn't mention RTSP/ONVIF support on it. If it does support the web interface and direct access, I would be fine exchanging for a model that doesn't require Amcrest Smart Home for setup.

I already have 4 wired Amcrest cameras, and a doorbell. I need Wi-Fi cameras because I want to add a couple of extra ones in places I can't run cabling.

Understand, Interesting though seeing the 841V3 that is in the same family as the 1041 offers ONVIF and RTSP as all the other older version as well.. Keep in mind that with all the Wifi Jamming Thefts right now I wouldn't put a Wifi camera on an area that hasn't already been seen by a camera with a Wired Connection.. That way if they Jam your wifi not that you live in that type of area they have to get past your normal wired cameras first.. Just trying to promote a safe Security..
