Any Way To Have The Preview For Multiple Cameras For Free?

Post by kingandtwich »

There is a balance to consider. Some people may not be able to tolerate standing all day, and many people who do stand all day--like surgeons, cashiers, and assembly line workers--may have developed some problems as a result. According to a study from Switzerland published in the journal Human Factors, standing for more than five hours a day can contribute to back pain, fatigue, and potential risk for long-term problems, regardless of age or gender.

The solution? Moving more and changing things up throughout the day. Alternating your sit/stand posture "alleviates both the issues with prolonged sitting and prolonged standing," according to the lead author of the Swiss study, Maria-Gabriela Garcia.

There's a reason that we're always encouraged to "take a stretch break." Whether you're standing at your desk, or sitting at a traditional one, what the body likes best is movement.

The freedom to alternate between sitting and standing also has proven productivity benefits. Research carried out by the Texas A&M Health Science Center School of Public Health studied 170 call center employees over a six-month period. One group sat all day, but the other had the option to sit or stand. The people with the sit-stand workstations were over 46 percent more productive than people who sat all day. The productivity didn't happen right away, but it increased as people got used to standing for periods of time.

Shopping for Standing Desks

WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

For most of us, working at a standing desk all day isn't practical, so having the flexibility both to stand and sit is essential. Fortunately, many standing desks convert between sitting and standing (various options are available at The Sharper Image, Pottery Barn, and EvoDesk).

An alternative to standing desks is a tall dining table, commonly known as a bar or pub table. I purchased one (Norraker bar table, IKEA, $150), and found the smallish 29-by-29 inch square top is large enough to hold my water bottle, phone, iMac 21" desk-model computer and Its separate keyboard. Thanks to the popular "industrial" look, there are a variety of tables with functional metal bases that are adjustable, some ranging from 40 to 45 inches (Trent Austin Design at Wayfair, $167). My husband chose a more table-sized desk, with a larger workspace to accommodate several computers, that Is convertible to as low as 27.5 inches for sitting, and as high as 47.5 Inches for standing (Stand Up Desk Store, via Amazon, $190).

If these options don't work for you, perhaps a lightweight "riser" to sit on top of your regular desk is a good solution. You can find several models at the nationwide office supply stores such as Office Depot and Staples.

Tabletop Tips

HOW HIGH SHOULD YOUR STANDING DESK BE?

You'll want your arms to bend naturally at the elbows for comfortable typing. Have someone help you measure: If you're holding your hands at a 90-degree angle, how high off the floor is that?

While shopping, I discovered that tables of 36 to 38 inches are easier to find and would work for most women. I'm 5'8", so my 41 -inch height surface works perfectly for me when I wear my running shoes. (If I work more than five hours throughout the day, I'll perch for a while on the tall cafe chair that pairs with my non-adjustable table/desk.) The desk height for someone 5'11 " is about 44 inches, and it seems that most desks in the range of 44 inches to 48 inches are adjustable.

How to Add More Movement to Your Day

In an interview published by U.S. News, avid runner and cardiologist Erin Michos, M.D., admitted that she was surprised to find that she was a victim of sitting disease-even though she runs an hour every day! After she began using a tracking device to monitor her daily steps, she realized that while she was exercising one hour a day, she was mostly sitting (or sleeping) the other 23 hours a day.

Like Michos, most people don't realize just how sedentary their days are until they get a wake-up call, whether it's from a tracking device or a scary diagnosis. No need to wait for that. Begin Incorporating more movement into your daily routine with these simple tricks:

Follow the 20-8-2 rule. For every 20 minutes of sitting, stand for eight minutes, and move for two.

Take TV breaks. Move while you watch TV-do leg lifts, slt-ups, or push-ups during commercials. When the episode ends, get up and move instead of sitting and waiting for the next show to begin.

Walk more. Walk while you talk on the phone, hold walking business meetings, or walk across the office to see a colleague Instead of phoning or e-malling them. Add walk breaks to your day, at lunch or after your evening meal. You can even stroll while chatting with a friend or family member-it doesn't always have to be a "power walk" to count.
