NAS Option versus FTP

Post by boomer »

Hello All,

After much frustration and experimentation I can report a number of observations and a recommended solution regarding the issues with FTP. I have 6 Amcrest cameras IP3M and IP4M series (latest firmware) linked via POE and a WDMYCLOUD NAS. The following was observed using FTP.
Using FTP option in storage destination:
1. One camera will work with FTP, sometimes.
2. After More than 1 camera I noted on the router logs a tremendous amount of unnecessary network traffic hitting the FTP port even though there was no camera activity. That's when most trouble starts.
3. Partial or very small 1 sec video files.
4. Hardly any snap shots.
5. Prior days were erased.
6. Trigger event "first ten seconds" missing from video.

Using NAS Option in storage destination:
All the above issues were solved.
After a number of days I get very large files, prior days are all there and I get the first ten seconds.
If using WDMYCLOUD NAS use the following for path in camera FTP setup: /nfs/XXXXX XXXXX=NAS folder name.
The camera will create a new folder under XXXXX with the name of the camera you gave it. Default is serial number. There is no test option like there is with FTP but if the folder is created with a DVR directory file in it, then you are good to go.

In summary, if you can, don't use FTP. NAS will give you everything you need.

I hope it helps.

I have a WD MYCLOUDMIRROR NAS which for every other purpose works perfectly. Neither of my IP2M-841B's will save using the NAS option. They accept the settings but then nothing is ever recorded. I can connect via FTP (using the IP address) but as mentioned above, the first 8-10 seconds of each recording is missing.

Did the NAS option work for you without any problems?

Try and ensure the share folder on the WDMYCLOUD is set to public access. There is a slide switch option in the share manager for the given folder. Since the camera cannot set credentials for the NAS option like FTP it needs to be public. Additionally see what the mycloud calls the share folder as the mount point and use that. Mine was /nfs/sharefolder name. Eg. /nfs/camerafiles Hope it helps.

Yes. NAS solved all the problems. I have all the footage with no missing parts.

That's great! Adding the " /nfs/ " in the camera NAS destination settings did the trick. I'll now be able to see over the next day or two if it's solved the lost 8-10 seconds problem.

p.s. - In fact I don't need to wait to see if it has worked. The postman has just been and the recording started before he got to my drive so that has solved it. Many thanks.

I now just need to wait for the 128GB I've allocated to run out so I can see if the files are correctly overwritten.
