Is SD card required for motion detection recording?

Do you have to have an SD card for the camera to automatically save recordings? I am trying to have the recordings automatically save to my NAS storage box and if I click on the record button in the web browser it will record and save to my NAS but I cannot figure out how to have it just start recording automatically when it detects motion. The model I have is the IP2M-841
