802 n

Post by steamer »

Greetings,
I have two IP3m-943 bullet cams and two IP2m-841 indoor ptz cams on my wifi network. Until now I have had them online with the router setting "mixed" as to what wifi protocol, they all work this way. I want to use the "802 only" setting on my router and have found that one IP3m-943 and one IP2m-841 do not work on the "n only" setting. All cameras have their respective updated firmwares so they are like each other in that respect. The specs state that the IP3m-943's work on the "802n" and the specs for the IP2m-841's state that they do not work on 802n (although I have one that does indeed work on "n". My question is why aren't they all working on the n only setting? Is there a setting I have missed somewhere in the IP config? I have called the help line and talked to a person and he did not know a solution but suggested factory re-setting the non "n" cameras and re-installing them. I don't want to do this unless its my only option because I finally have everything working fairly well now (lots of tinkering). I am not sure that setting my router to "mixed" (Linksys) will bar some cams from using the "n" or not, I need the speed as we all do.

N vs G is hardware not software (firmware). If the non-compatible cameras don't have MIMO hardware, they won't connect to N.

My two bullet cams are the same model and specs say they should both work on the "802.11b/g/n" one does and one does not. I need to know why, perhaps one is defective. My two ptz cams specs (IPM-841) state they only work on 802.11b/g". But curiously one does indeed work on "n". Would be nice if all these cams worked on "n". Need warrantee service if one bullet cam cannot work on "n".

What is the model number of your router. If you connect g rated devices and n rated devices to the router in mixed mode, all will connect at g.

All will be at G is what I was thinking too.

Try using 2 SSIDs and set one to N and one to Mixed. Connect the N compatible cameras to the N SSID and the G compatible cqmeras to the G SSID. You can use the 5g for N and 2.4 for G or use the guest network. The philosophy is that the router will connect all the devices on a SSID at a rate of the slowest conected device. Let me know how that works.

Good Idea as a workaround. None of these cams can use 5g though. I wish the Amcrest phone techs would call back when they say they will ("going to find out from some other techs why bullet cam won't use "n", will get back to you in a day or two"). I guess I have a defective bullet cam but maybe its bearable.
I will use the guest network for the g's. A day or two to make the change, have to get off my butt and do some physical labor which I also enjoy but this idea is certainly tempting me to forsake finishing my new bedroom remodel...

Well I am surprised and amazed! here is what I did to make all four of my cams work on 802.11n (or so I think they are on n). The two that didn't like "n" I hard reset and finally added them NOT by the Ethernet method, but by the wireless method. My Linksys modem I have set at "N only". I take that literally and I hope it is in fact only working with "N". Puzzling though why two cams (IP2M-841's) are working on the n when their specs say they do not have that capability. Makes me doubt the linskys router "only n" setting. Its a "smart router". I hope its not a smartass router.
A curious thing when I added these cams before with the Ethernet cable method. When I got to the stage of installation when the app searches for the wifi I wanted to connect to, it never displayed one at all (Like the wireless way does). But I still added a wifi password anyway to the wifi signal I wanted. They worked but not on the n setting, only g. Will I ever know if I am truly on the n or not?

Called Linksys and the one I talked to confirms that "n only" setting is just that and will not accept any other. So Perhaps the specs are wrong on the IP2M-841 since they are using the n speed. will call Amcrest again.

steamer--are your cameras connecting to your N router on the 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz band?
