.backup files ?

Hello !
Just applied the most recent firmware for my IP2M-841 cameras (V2.420.AC00.15.R.20160908) and read the change log.
I think it's great that the recordings default to .mp4. I haven't tried playback on a Mac or PC yet, but will soon.
In running the directory structure that is now produced, I noticed the appearance of a .backup file. Is this similar to (or replacing) the DVRWorkDirectory ? I am writing scripts to process the files recorded to my NAS and would like to know the purpose. Also, is the DVRWorkDirectory no longer used?
