Smart Search in recording

My foscam cameras are set to record all the time. When I try to use the Smart Search feature in the recording all I get is the message 'There is no motion detect data in current region'
I have motion detect enabled under Settings--Event. What else am I doing wrong?
This is on the nv1104.

Step by step what I'm doing
I select the recording from one camera to view. When it starts playing the smart search button is now able to be clicked. I click smart search then select an area on the screen with the blue grid. I hit smart search button again and it says 'There is no motion detect data in current region'

Same issue here. Smart Search used to work but no longer does. Have updated the firmware but still unable to get it working.
