Hi,
Just had this same problem and solved it but it requires you to have a vga->vga or vga->dvi cable and compatible monitor and the dvr to have a vga/rgb connector. This is if you put the matrix mode in HDMI.
I had an issue with the screen cutoff on the bottom so I was going through the settings I hit System->video matrix->hdmi and checked it on (don't do this) to see if it would fix it.
This caused the me to lose control of the dvr(no mouse/controls didn't work) but the cameras were still working.
What it seems like is the matrix mode allows you to run both outputs one as a fixed display and the other as the interface.
I plugged in a vga->vga cord into the dvr to an old monitor and sure enough the menu system is present and functional. I was able to use the vga side to switch the SYSTEM->video matrix OFF and it restored the functionality back to the hdmi screen.
Hope this helps someone.

Re: Get back to Menu from camera wall view
Thanks a TON! This actually worked! I hooked up my DVR to my 55inch TV through HDMI and I can now use my mouse to access controls and change system setting. Much appreciated.
