Safest way to connect

Post by emets31 »

Hello, everyone! I am looking to purchase some cameras for my home. I am looking at the IP2M-842 bullet cams for outdoors, and the IP2M-841 for indoors. I was reading around online, trying to get an idea about the security and safety measures implemented by others to secure the cams from outside snooping. I cam across a few stories about how others have hacked these cameras, as well as a user who said he returned his camera only to discover that he was still receiving alerts and could see into the new owners bedroom. So, I was wondering if anyone could share any insight as to how they have prevented outsiders from gaining access to their cams? I was trying to come up with a solution, but it seems like if you want remote access to the cams, this isn't easy.

So, is there a way to secure these cams as much as possible, and still have remote access? Would setting them up behind a VPN be the best way, and if so, would it be hack proof? I thought about connecting the cams to a switch, which would then be connected to a PC on my network with 2 NICs (one NIC for network access, and the other set on a subnet strictly for the cams). Then, using the VPN, I would remote into my PC for access. But, is that overkill? Would the VPN be enough to secure everything?

Thanks in advance, and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hello emets31,

We do release firmware updates periodically and they come with a lot of security enhancements. So we recommend to always be updated with the latest firmware and then use a very strong password.

VPN is a very secure option that you can try.

Thank you, Melvin. Does anyone else have any insight?

Also, I wanted to add a question about connecting these cameras to an Amcrest 960H. I saw that the 960H works with ONVIF cams; so how does one go about connecting them to this DVR? Would they first connect to a switch that is then connected to the DVR?
