NVR keeps on rebooting itself

Post by drcaesar »

I bought NV4108 a couple of days ago. It started ok so I went into the management console and configured whatever I needed. Easy. Now, I installed a brand new 2TB hdd and the NVR keeps rebooting itself. Tried everything I could but nothing works. Just keeps on rebooting itself.

Power lights on and ACT lights on in about 15 seconds and then reboots itself with a beep.

I have the same exact problem! Did you get this figured out? I found it trying to trouble shoot that if I keep the ethernet cable unplugged and start it, it will boot. Sometimes however as soon as I plug the ethernet cable in, it will reboot and bootloop. Very frustrating. I reached out to tech support and have not heard back yet.

Are you getting the "Cloud Update" screen that pops up too?

Using my method of unplugging the ethernet cable and starting it, I got it to boot last night. This morning woke up to it bootlooping and beeping.

Ok tech support said I have a defective unit and they are going to replace it. I am going to send it back to amazon and get something different. You have that problem, I have that problem, and someone on amazon wrote a review with that problem. Looks like this one is not ready for prime time

I just received mine tonight and have been having the same issue. It appears to be in an update/reboot loop. I've been able to make it stay up and running as long as I block the outbound traffic to 54.84.228.44, which will probably change to another AWS IP before long and cause me issues again. I may just block all outbound traffic from the NVR and leave it.

I'd be interested to hear if your replacement box fixes the issue. Base on my packet captures, I'm guessing it's wanting to do any update and fails when it gets a 403 forbidden as seen in the second TCP stream below.

Also, looking at the firmware page... it doesn't appear that my NV4108 has an available update yet.

And another one bites the dust. Same NVR. Same exact issue with Cloud Update screen pop up. Unit didn't work 15 min before 1st reboot.
This morning, nothing... Just Blue power light... Officially garbage...

I don't know that I'd go so far to say that they are "broken" right now. It may be a permission issue on the Amcrest AWS update server. If you unplug the ethernet cable or block outbound traffic on a firewall it would likely work.

It seems to me that software has a bug that forces a reboot if some mandatory update can not be applied or downloaded. Which is ridiculous on multiple levels.

1. Consumer OWNED equipment should never have updates applied without permission or unscheduled.
2. Applications should never panic when failing to DOWNLOAD an update. You can clearly see in the second snippet of html code below, the Amcrest/Amazon AWS server is not allowing my NVR to download amcrest-firmwares/NVR4000_emergency_20160325_10002_*.bin.

I have been able to add cameras and start configuring by blocking access to the AWS server, but this is a temporary workaround at best. I've not tried any of the cloud stuff yet, perhaps you have to register there before it authorizes you to download?

My concern is that once Amcrest resolves this issue, what happens again a year from now when I'm 2000 miles away from it???

I was experiencing the same issue with the NVR rebooting after about an hour with a network connection. Unplugged the network cable and the unit worked fine.

Adding the blocking rules to my router for dh.amcrestsecurity.com fixed my reboot problem. There is definitely a firmware issue on this model.

I fucked around with this for 8 hours today. Figured out the network cable trick... thought it was a DHCP thing. Blocking the address fixed my problem. Made an account just to say thank you.
