Dual IPs on IP3M-HX2, Wifi not disabling

Post by Litcube »

You folks really need to fix the Wifi setup.

If you disable Wifi and go the wired route, your camera will still pick up an IP address for the wifi. Disable should disable it, but it does not.

I tried the new firmware w/ a factory reset.

I noticed something similar in the past where one of my cameras actually had two 'live' IP addresses on my network.

My setup was as follows:-
1.Camera was connected by ethernet and WiFi was disabled.
2. It had previously been used on WiFi.
3. It was set to fixed IP not DHCP.
4. My router allocates IP's via DHCP but only in the range between 192.168.1.54 to 192.168.1.254
5. The camera was using and responding normally to 192.168.1.12 and 192.168.1.13

If I disconnected the ethernet cable it stopped responding and when I connected it again it came back live at both addresses.

I no longer set my cameras up initially over WiFi but do it all on ethernet. After I had done a factory reset on that camera and set it up from scratch, the dual IP disappeared.

The bottom line is that for me it was of no actual consequence, just something I noticed in passing. Does your camera actually work when the ethernet cable is removed?

Litcube,
If you don't like the "wireless" IP address staying around, you could block it in your router and it won't go anywhere.

Strange thing is that isn't really the case... I didn't even setup my Wifi IP in my router and my Router didn't even have it in the List of devices. Over Ethernet I logged into the camera, went to network, tcp/ip and setup a wifi Ip address and set it to static. I then logged out of the camera. Went to my Router checked the table nope not there... Opened up IE and typed in the Ip address I just set and strange thing was it went there anyway... I then thought it has to be in the router now... Look again still nothing in there...

Try this on for size... I run a Multi IP pool on my computer... So I thought ok. Lets try this... I set up under 192.168.1.220, The Ip for the camera was set before at 10.0.0.220.... I was still able to access it over that Ip address and that isn't even in the Pool of this router or my Switch... However if you unplug the Cable from Switch that Ip address no longer functions..... Unless it is setup in the Router with Log in and Password for router.... Strange I say..

So thought I would also update this some with more testing....

So I went and added the IP on my Router by changing the system to IP after going to 10.0.0.218. I unplugged the Cable and did a Setup. Then that Ip is in my router under 10.0.0.220. I then changed the Ip address again with the Cable connected again now. Changed and logged into the 218 address. In the network again i changed that back to 192.168.1.220. After doing that I refreshed the Router and that Ip address is there.... Now because before I said it wasn't in my Router and it wasn't However thought maybe they had it in the table before and might be able to block it. That is why I did this.. I then under Security and access, I clicked the 192.168.1.220 that is on my table of connected IPs and choose Block. apply and went to IE and typed in 192.168.1.220 and even with it blocked it still went there and was able to log in and even go to setup...

I did make a Video of this to if I needed to upload I can add it to my youtube videos... However seeing the router isn't in my current room I didn't video showing that the Connection is lost when you unplug the cable Blocked or not if not setup... If setup and blocked I did test when you unplug it will not connect... Unblocked under right IP lol it will connect. Meaning I have to change it back to 10.0.0.220 because that is the range it is broadcasting... Block that it won't access however if it is connected over cable with that ip blocked it will still access it...

OK after reading all that I confused myself lol.. So I thought I will edit make a Map...

IP normal system Wifi is 10.0.0.220
Ip Normal system Cable 10.0.0.218
Ip Edited to Wifi 192.168.1.220

Wifi added to Router via Setup over Phone App with Cable not connected. IP at that time.... 10.0.0.220
Then plugged back in Router to camera. Log in 10.0.0.218 and make change to camera Set static 192.168.1.220
Refresh Router that address now comes up... 192.168.1.220 along with all my other 10.0.0.XXX Ips... I then in my router click access control tab and click the 192.168.1.220 and Block. That IP is now RED in my access and says Blocked. I go to IE and I type in 192.168.1.220 and I am able to still connect with that IP blocked....
Unblock and change IP in camera back to 10.0.0.220 and unplug router. Able to connect over IP... I block 10.0.0.220 in router and no longer able to connect while cable is unplugged from camera... I plug back in cable and now I can connect to camera over 10.0.0.220 even though it is Blocked in router.... test Complete...

OK, I was wrong and it doesn't work on your router and possibly others. But actually I think this a problem that does not need a solution. I don't see a wired camera with two IP addresses as being a problem.

@Litcube Can you clarify that what you are seeing is the camera is still accessible even though WiFi is disabled in the settings AND the ethernet cable is disconnected. If that is correct then I would say it is an issue.

I agree that 2 IP addresses is not a problem with one small proviso and that is that the router is not running DHCP and allocating IP's in the same range. Chasing down IP conflicts on a network with a couple of hundred devices connected has caused me considerable hair loss in the past but it's not a problem that's likely to affect domestic users. :)

If the Cable is Disconnected and is still able to access the camera it would be because the camera was setup with Wifi abilities. Like in my Testing. If I unplug once I setup the Wifi. It will work on Wifi. however if I didn't setup Wifi or I block it after Unplugging it then it wouldn't work...

However Blocked or Not with Cable plugged in it will go down the cable over either of the 2 IP's I do find that the Wifi IP isn't as stable. Things take longer to come in. A second or 2 not much longer but I can tell you that it isn't going over WIFI... How can I tell you this?

Because I did more testing LOL... I Reset my camera back to Factory. I set my camera up to Wifi, I tested as all others tested before... I then went a Step more and after all test was done I then tested the Camera to see if it was going over cable as we know it was because if you don't set up and unplug the cable that wifi connection stops too.. But to be sure I didn't block the IP, I setup up to use WIfi. I did all test, left the cable plugged in, Then I turn off my WIFI so the router was only a Switch no ability to take any Wifi only work over Cables... And yes the Connection on the WIFI IP that was setup in the Camera still works as if it was working over WIFI... I then again disconnect the cable and connection over Wifi setup IP stops working...

@Litcube As I understand it WiFi is disabled like this:-
wifi disabled.jpg
wifi disabled.jpg (38.58 KiB) Viewed 1304 times
but even so the camera can still be accessed.

IF that is the case AND the ethernet cable is disconnected from the camera then I see it as an issue.
